Pilot whales discovered in Kalsoyarfjörður, tagging planned in Klaksvík

A small pod of pilot whales was discovered in Kalsoyarfjörður this morning. Jacob Vestergaard, the district commissioner for the northern region, stated that the whales would not be kept in captivity, as there are already enough whales in the area.

Instead, the plan is to mark the whales that have entered the lagoon in Klaksvík. Representatives from the Faroese Marine Research Institute will tag around 3-4 whales.

Whale leaders are currently arranging a few boats to guide the whales into the designated area in Klaksvík, where a sanctioned whaling site is available. The whales will be held there until the tagging process is complete, according to Bjarni Mikkelsen, a biologist at the Marine Research Institute.

In addition to the pilot whales, a small group of minke whales was spotted off the coast of Skálavík this morning. The district commissioner for the area, Kristian Martin Joensen, confirmed that this is a small group of minke whales.

“It is not customary to keep minke whales in Húsavík, so they will not be held in captivity,” Joensen added.
