Warnings issued for avalanche risks in Northern Iceland following heavy snowfall

Authorities in Northern Iceland have issued warnings about the risk of avalanches in the Tröllaskagi and Flateyjarskagi mountain ranges following significant snowfall over the past weekend. Local residents involved in sheep herding have been cautioned to avoid steep, snow-covered slopes, where there is an increased risk of triggering avalanches.

Ágúst Ólafsson from the meteorological office advises those traversing these areas to exercise caution, particularly in regions where the snow has accumulated in unstable layers. He noted that people walking in these areas could inadvertently initiate avalanches themselves. While the likelihood of natural avalanche occurrences is lower now, the sun’s warmth could still cause some snow to slide.

Avalanche expert Sveinn Brynjófsson emphasizes that even small avalanches can be dangerous. “It only takes a small avalanche to cause harm to individuals in steep terrains filled with rocks and uneven landscapes,” he explained. The risk is particularly acute in the mountains of Tröllaskagi and Flateyjarskagi, though no accidents have been reported so far.

Recent observations indicate that several avalanches have occurred in the region, primarily attributed to human activity. Despite this, officials have yet to receive reports of any injuries or incidents related to the snowfall. With ongoing weather warnings in place, residents and visitors are urged to prioritize safety when navigating the snow-laden landscape.
