Heatwave affects Gulf of Finland and Bothnian Sea in Finland

A strong heatwave is currently affecting the Gulf of Finland and the Bothnian Sea. Furthermore, the entire Finnish coastline has experienced at least a moderate heatwave since the first week of September. The Gulf of Finland has recorded some of the highest September temperatures in approximately 30 years of measurement history. Average daily temperatures have been more than five degrees Celsius above the norm.

Finnish meteorological officials now have a new tool to analyze marine heatwaves along the country’s coast. Developed by the Finnish Meteorological Institute, this instrument identifies and classifies marine heatwaves based on their intensity.
