Northern Lights visible across southern Finland due to solar mass ejection

On Wednesday and Thursday, there was a high likelihood of spotting the Northern Lights across southern Finland. This phenomenon was attributed to elevated magnetic activity resulting from a solar mass ejection. According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute, the chances of seeing the auroras are expected to decrease towards the end of the week. However, in Lapland, the Northern Lights are common even during periods of calmer space weather.

Statistically, the best time to observe the Northern Lights is around the autumn equinox in late September, when the Earth’s position is most favorable for aurora formation, explains meteorologist Nina Karusto. “Darker evenings and improving weather conditions also enhance the possibilities,” she adds.

The vibrancy of the Northern Lights is influenced by the type of solar mass ejection or the intensity of the solar wind approaching Finland. Stronger activity results in a broader spectrum of colors, including purples. Conversely, during periods of weaker solar wind, green hues are typically the most common.

For those who have captured stunning photos of the Northern Lights and wish to share them, there is an option to submit images through a designated form, ensuring appropriate rights and permissions are granted for their use across various platforms.
