Joint conscription events held for men and women at Finnish Defense Forces training center by Lake Tuusula

In a historic first, joint conscription events for men and women seeking voluntary military service were held at the Finnish Defense Forces (FDF) training center by Lake Tuusula. This reform aims to increase the number of women entering military service. If the pilot project, currently being tested in Uusimaa, Tavastia, and Lapland, proves successful, joint conscription could be rolled out nationwide by autumn 2028.

Traditionally, men and women have attended separate conscription sessions, but this integration marks a significant shift, potentially paving the way for discussions about universal conscription for women. The number of men entering service is declining, with current estimates suggesting around 30,000 18-year-old men participating this year, dropping to fewer than 25,000 by the 2030s. The FDF seeks to recruit 2,000 women annually, a goal currently falling short by about half.

Participants Mila Miettinen, Ada-Sofia Manelius, and Terhi Karhu shared their insights on attracting more women to military service. Elina Riutta, president of the Conscripts’ Union, noted that this joint conscription simplifies the application process for women and fosters a sense of community among recruits by recognizing them as equals in the military.

Lieutenant Colonel Tatu Mikkola, leader of the Uusimaa regional office, expressed hopes that more women would consider military careers, thus balancing gender representation within the armed forces. The push for reform began in 2021, aiming for integration based on gender equity in conscription while addressing the shrinking age group of eligible recruits. Public sentiment reflects over 70% support for equal conscription from Finns under 30, highlighting a growing awareness of gender equality in national service.
