Finland issues rainfall warning as heavy downpours expected across the country

Finland is under a broad rainfall warning, with the Meteorological Institute predicting heavy downpours exceeding 50 millimeters within 24 hours. Areas most susceptible to flooding include underpasses and low-lying regions in urban zones. There is an increased risk of hydroplaning on the roads.

Today, a cold front bringing rain stretches from the southern coast through Central Finland to Eastern Lapland, with widespread precipitation expected.

Tomorrow, Saturday, the focus of the rain will shift slightly westward. Rainfall will generally occur across a region extending from the southwestern coast to northeastern areas, and conditions may still be quite wet. Furthermore, warm air from Russia is pushing towards the east, potentially bringing temperature highs to summer-like levels in sunlit spots near the eastern border.

Rain will persist in many areas on Sunday, with consistent showers predicted from the southern coast up to Northern Ostrobothnia and Northeast Finland. Meanwhile, weather conditions will improve in Lapland, with clearer skies and sunshine expected in the eastern regions. While rainfall remains significant, it is forecasted to be less intense than in previous days.

Forecast updates for Sunday have varied considerably from earlier predictions, and there is still considerable uncertainty regarding the weather outlook, which may evolve significantly in the coming days.
