Efforts underway to cover roads over lava flow in Svartsengi, Iceland

Efforts are underway to cover roads that were temporarily constructed over newly solidified lava in northern Svartsengi. Although the volcanic eruption has ceased, the lava flow’s edge continues to advance.

A new layer of covering is being applied to roads that were created after molten lava blocked access routes to the Blue Lagoon. These temporary roads were initially built to facilitate travel after the lava spread over nearby highways, specifically the Blue Lagoon road and Grindavík road.

Access to the eruption site remains nearly impossible due to the still-active lava flow edge, which is expected to continue moving in the coming days. The lava deposit is the largest recorded to date, and just north of this area lies a danger zone contaminated with both active and dormant explosive devices. These explosives pose a lethal threat to anyone within a 300-meter radius if activated.

Additionally, a new magma accumulation has begun beneath Svartsengi, indicating ongoing geological activity in the region. Meanwhile, preparations are in place for a seven-kilometer fencing installation in the nearby town of Grindavík to ensure safety and security in response to the volcanic activity.

This situation highlights the unpredictable nature of volcanic eruptions in Iceland and underscores the importance of monitoring and managing risks in affected communities.
