The Minister of Finance, Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson, has criticized the online sales of alcohol by the Icelandic supermarket chain Hagkaup, which began today. He deemed the initiative irresponsible, given the rising rates of underage drinking and violence among youth.

In a statement, Jóhannsson expressed concern about the implications of increased accessibility to alcohol coinciding with a rise in both adolescent alcohol consumption and serious violent incidents. He noted that, despite previous pledges from store chains to delay entering this market until legal ambiguities were resolved, Hagkaup has chosen to proceed, raising eyebrows.

Jóhannsson highlighted an ongoing legal investigation concerning alcohol sales, which exist in a legally gray area in Iceland. He emphasized that retail chains should uphold their responsibility and maintain clear ethical standards, particularly during a time when society has made significant progress in combating youth drinking.

He further remarked, “It feels irresponsible for these entities to open such stores at this time,” referring to the potential ramifications of their actions amidst ongoing societal challenges.

Additionally, Jóhannsson reminded that established laws regarding alcohol sales and substance abuse prevention cannot be altered at will by businesses. He underscored the importance of continuing to tackle the issues of youth intoxication and the associated rise in violence, calling for a thoughtful approach to alcohol accessibility in the current climate.
