Faroe Islands

The police in the Faroe Islands alerted authorities in Greenland that Paul Watson, aboard his vessel John Paul DeJoria, was arriving in Greenland. This led to Watson’s arrest in Nuuk on July 21, as the ship docked for refueling.

Information about Watson’s situation was revealed this morning during a discussion in the legal committee of the Danish Parliament (Folketing). Peter Hummelgaard, the Minister of Justice, was questioned about who initiated the arrest of Watson, but details were not disclosed.

Sjúrður Skaale, a Faroese member of parliament, also participated in the conversation concerning Watson.

In response to ongoing inquiries, Hummelgaard acknowledged that the matter would first be processed by the police in Greenland, then forwarded to the Danish State Prosecutor, before eventually reaching the Minister of Justice for a final decision on whether Watson should be extradited.

Following Watson’s arrest on July 21, he was held in pre-trial detention until September 5. However, a Greenlandic court ruled on September 4 to extend the detention, now set to last until October 2.
