Vogar council initiates merger discussions with Reykjanesbær and Suðurnesjabær

The municipal council of Vogar has approved discussions to explore the potential merger of the municipality with Reykjanesbær and/or Suðurnesjabær. This decision follows a similar proposal from the Reykjanesbær council made last week.

The move is part of the ongoing efforts by a project group established by the councils of the three municipalities in February. The group concluded that a merger could be beneficial, but it is conditional upon changes to the rules governing the Equalization Fund for municipalities. Specifically, any funding allocated to the combined municipality must not be lower than the individual contributions currently received by each municipality.

Additionally, the new municipality would need to gain control over state-owned land within its borders to facilitate the construction of housing and support local economic development.
