Copenhagen clubs face potential fan bans amid violence concerns

Empty stands without cheers, songs, and spectators could soon become a reality at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen and Brøndby IF’s home ground during matches between archrivals FC Copenhagen and Brøndby IF. This warning comes from Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard ahead of a meeting involving the minister, the clubs, their fan groups, and several organizations.

The discussion is prompted by recent violent incidents following a derby match on September 1, where clashes with police occurred, and a 7-Eleven store near Parken was looted and vandalized. Hummelgaard expressed concerns over what the clubs are doing to address behavior from their supporters. He stated, “If this doesn’t improve, I am prepared to say that maybe we need to operate for a longer period where the larger clubs, which always have issues, are not allowed to play with fans or away supporters.”

Hummelgaard emphasized the need for clubs to take greater responsibility in preventing violence and maintaining order. He also referenced a political agreement in 2022 aimed at strengthening efforts against hooliganism, with new laws effective from July 1, 2023, expanding the range of offenses that could incur stadium bans.

Christian Rothmann, chair of Danske Fanklubber, believes fan groups are doing their part to prevent disorder. He highlighted previous initiatives to improve cooperation between clubs and law enforcement, including better communication and meetings surrounding derby matches.

While the justice minister noted he regretted the prospect of banning fans from matches, he maintained it might be necessary if current incidents persist, acknowledging the financial impact on clubs. The parties involved will convene today to discuss the situation further.
