The Icelandic presidential couple, Halla Tómasdóttir and Björn Skúlason, are set to embark on their first official visit in early October. They will meet with Danish King Frederik X and his wife, Queen Mary, during this trip. The visit is scheduled for October 8 and 9, marking a significant occasion as it is the first official visit since Frederik became king on February 14, following the unexpected abdication of his mother, Queen Margrethe, at the end of the year.

The Danish royal family will host a formal dinner on the first day of the visit. Accompanied by a business delegation, the presidential couple aims to strengthen cooperation between Iceland and Denmark, particularly focusing on technology and the transition to green energy.

Though it has become a tradition for the first official visit of an Icelandic president to be to Denmark, the country was not visited by Iceland’s first president, Sveinn Björnsson. The first official trip to Denmark by an Icelandic president was made by Ásgeir Ásgeirsson in 1954, with King Frederik IX visiting Iceland two years later.
