A man in his thirties was sentenced today to seven and a half years in prison for stabbing Ingunn Björnsdóttir, a lecturer at the University of Oslo. He was also convicted for injuring another colleague who tried to assist her. The court ordered him to pay approximately five million Icelandic krona in compensation to Ingunn.

Ingunn sustained life-threatening injuries during the attack, which included a severe neck wound and multiple stabbings to her abdomen, arms, and legs. The assailant admitted to stabbing Ingunn but denied any intention to kill her, claiming he modified his actions after realizing that a stab to the neck could be fatal.

The assault occurred shortly after the assailant received a disappointing grade in a pharmacology exam. It is believed he targeted Ingunn, who he blamed for his academic struggles.

During his defense, the man described his experience of trauma from the attack and its consequences. However, when asked if he regretted the incident concerning Ingunn, he replied, “No, not regarding Björnsdóttir,” indicating a lack of empathy towards her plight.

The severity of the injuries Ingunn suffered was profound, and she was fortunate to survive the attack. The case highlights significant issues surrounding violence and accountability in educational settings in Norway.
