The Icelandic Coast Guard has issued several warnings over the last two days regarding icebergs within its territorial waters. A total of around ten alerts have been sent out due to the presence of two significant icebergs in particular areas: one located in Húnaflói and the other deep within the Westfjords.

According to a spokesperson for the Coast Guard, mariners reported the sightings of these icebergs, prompting the issuance of warnings for sailors navigating in Icelandic waters. The Coast Guard has not conducted special inspections related to these icebergs, and it remains uncertain if such actions might occur in the near future.

The spokesperson remarked that it is not particularly unusual to see icebergs within Iceland’s territorial waters, citing that these formations may be drifting from the coastline of Greenland. However, he acknowledged a lack of complete knowledge on the matter. As summer has just ended, it is possible that icebergs are arriving from northern regions, though no definitive conclusions can be drawn at this stage.

As the situation develops, the Coast Guard continues to monitor potential maritime hazards while advising seafarers to remain vigilant concerning ice conditions in the area.
