The Pirkanmaa District Court has sentenced 31-year-old Toni Tapani Kangas to life imprisonment for the murder of his fiancée. The police discovered the body of the 25-year-old victim in an apartment last October, leading to Kangas’s immediate arrest at the scene. While Kangas admitted to killing his fiancée, he denied the charge of murder.

The court characterized the act as particularly brutal, detailing that it involved multiple dangerous methods of assault. The judge concluded that the circumstances warranted a murder charge due to the violent nature of the crime. The incident took place in a supported housing unit in Pispala, Tampere, where it was revealed that there had been prior incidents of domestic violence.

Additionally, Kangas had been previously convicted for assault. However, charges related to a second assault and deprivation of liberty were dismissed. The court determined that Kangas was mentally competent at the time of the offense.

The ruling is not yet final and can be appealed in the Court of Appeal.
