A new lamb made its unexpected appearance this week, hopping home from the mountains despite the harsh northern weather. The conditions in northern Iceland have turned decidedly winter-like, characterized by strong northern winds and sleet. Locals in the Mývatn area woke up to a white landscape this morning, but amidst this chill, a newborn lamb gracefully returned to its farm.

Farmers at Vagnbrekka were pleasantly surprised by the arrival of the lamb. While the weather has been dull and cold, they have mostly managed to bring their livestock home just in time. On this day, they were busy weighing and sorting lambs for the upcoming slaughter season. However, concerns about the weather persist, particularly regarding the state of the pastures. “It’s not looking great if it continues to freeze like this,” remarked Egill Freysteinsson, a farmer at Vagnbrekka. “You have to just hope for the best and that it warms up again soon.”

As travelers near Mývatn experienced the chill as well, plans for many were disrupted. Despite the unfavorable conditions, American tourists Kerry Walker and Winn Kengis were undeterred, noting that aside from this day, their trip had been filled with beautiful weather. “We’ve had sunny days, rainy days, and this one was the only bad weather day,” they reflected, demonstrating a resilient spirit amid Iceland’s unpredictable weather.
