Halla Tómasdóttir, the President of Iceland, convened the Alþingi today for the start of its 155th legislative assembly, marking her inaugural session in office.

In her opening address, Tómasdóttir addressed pressing societal issues, including violence, housing crises, education, and immigration matters. She began her speech by acknowledging the national sorrow following the stabbing incident during Menningarnótt, Iceland’s cultural night. Tómasdóttir emphasized the importance of nurturing the youth and responding to the call from the parents of the deceased girl by making love the only weapon in society.

She asserted that it is essential to ensure that such tragic events never happen again, stressing that in this collective responsibility, political divisions should not play a role.

As the new legislative session unfolds, Tómasdóttir’s agenda and focus on crucial social issues reflect a commitment to fostering dialogue and enacting change in Icelandic society.
