A man suspected of having killed a woman in Selfoss last year has died while abroad. He was not under travel restrictions at the time of his death. The individual, believed to be in his thirties, was connected to the suspicious death of a woman in her thirties found in her home on April 27 of the previous year.

The main suspect maintained his innocence, claiming he found the woman dead. During the investigation, he acknowledged making mistakes at the scene, such as failing to immediately call emergency services and attempting resuscitation. He explained that he was in shock, under the influence of drugs, and not thinking clearly.

He was in custody for eighteen weeks, but restrictions on his travel were lifted in early December of last year, after which he was not subject to any further coercive measures and retained his status as a suspect. The police investigation into the case took nearly 230 days to conclude and was then forwarded to the local prosecutor’s office to determine if charges would be filed.

Forensic experts determined that the cause of death was strangulation, with cocaine intoxication playing a contributing role. The prosecutor decided earlier this year to seek a second opinion on the autopsy report before making any decisions regarding charges. The investigation remains ongoing.
