A man suspected of killing a woman in Selfoss last year has passed away. He was abroad at the time of his death and was not under travel restrictions.

The deceased man, in his thirties, faced allegations of murdering a woman of the same age in Selfoss. Confirmation of his death comes from his defense attorney. Reports indicate he died in Thailand.

The woman was discovered dead in her home in Selfoss on April 27 of the previous year. Her stepbrothers were initially taken into custody, although the younger brother was released shortly thereafter. The man was alleged to have caused her death by asphyxiation and denied the charges, claiming he discovered her after her passing.

He admitted to making mistakes at the scene, such as delaying his call to emergency services, attempting resuscitation, and taking a drive with his brother afterward. He explained that he was in shock, heavily under the influence of drugs, and not thinking clearly at the time.

Following 18 weeks in custody, his travel restrictions were lifted in early December of the previous year, and he was not subjected to any further coercive measures, though he retained the status of a suspect.

The police investigation took extensive time, concluding nearly 230 days after the woman’s death. The case was subsequently sent to the district prosecutor’s office for review. Forensic experts determined that the cause of death was asphyxiation, with cocaine intoxication contributing to her demise. In the spring, the prosecutor sought a second opinion on the autopsy report to decide on the next steps in the case.
