Total solar eclipse to draw thousands to Iceland in August 2024

A total solar eclipse will be visible from Iceland for the first time since 1954 on August 12, 2024. This astronomical event occurs when the moon completely covers the sun, rendering day into night. With this celestial occurrence expected to attract thousands of visitors, preparations have begun, particularly in the Reykjanes area, which could face significant traffic issues.

Sævar Helgi Bragason, an experienced eclipse chaser, is preparing for the 2026 event, projecting that many will travel to see it. He cautions that infrastructure may struggle to cope with the influx, particularly on the roads leading to the airport, warning that congestion could cause travelers to miss flights.

The municipality of Vesturbyggð is also taking steps to plan for the event, led by council member Páll Vilhjálmsson. He emphasizes the need to assess the expected crowd size, which could range from dozens to thousands of people. They are considering traffic management measures, possibly restricting vehicle access and coordinating with landowners and safety authorities.

Hotels in the vicinity, such as Hotel Breiðavík, report high demand, with manager Birna Atladóttir having received bookings up to thirteen years in advance. She predicts that the influx could lead to a “complete failure” in hotel services, a sentiment echoed by the local land warden who states that even current visitor numbers exceed sustainability levels.

The intersection of tourism and infrastructure presents challenges, and both public services and to local businesses are urged to prepare effectively for this unprecedented event.
