Last summer, extensive pink bacterial growths were observed in Miehikkälä, located in Kymenlaakso, according to the municipality’s environmental and health authorities. Authorities have noted these occurrences several times, leading them to investigate due to public concern. This type of bacterial growth had not been previously detected in the local water bodies. Currently, the specific bacteria and its cause of proliferation remain unidentified.

The bacterial growths have been reported in Pitkälammi and Myllylammi lakes. Local environmental and health protection officials are actively examining the situation to determine the nature of the bacteria and what might be driving its unusual increase in these waters.

According to environmental authorities, there have been no known health hazards associated with this particular bacterium to date. However, as a precautionary measure, they recommend avoiding the use of lake water for any purpose, including swimming, when visible bacterial growths are present.

Officials are encouraging locals to share any sightings of bacterial growths via email at [email protected].
