Calm night for emergency services in Iceland as storm warnings continue

Tuesday 10th 2024 on 10:23 in
Iceland

The night was calm for emergency services across Iceland, which were on standby due to a storm that hit parts of the country the previous evening. The last weather warnings will expire early on Wednesday morning.

In Reykjahlíð, located in the Mývatn region, there is a snow cover around the mountain roads and poor travel conditions. Emergency services did not receive any calls overnight related to a northern gale affecting the northern regions of the country. Winter road conditions persist, and travelers are urged to delay their journeys until conditions improve.

Orange and yellow weather warnings remain in effect, mainly due to the strong northern winds, snow, and drifting snow in northern areas and the highlands, as well as severe gales in the southeastern part of the country.

While uncertainty remains regarding weather conditions, emergency response officials were prepared, and thus far, the situation has not escalated. No incidents were reported overnight. Travelers, particularly international tourists, were cautioned as they may face difficulties on mountainous roads regardless of the weather.

Snow has fallen on many mountain roads, especially in Mývatn, where significant snowfall was recorded overnight. Clearance efforts are ongoing in areas such as Fjarðarheiði and Fagradal, where the landscape is blanketed in white. Update on road conditions can be checked via the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration’s website.
