The Helsinki Police Department has concluded its preliminary investigation into a suspected murder in Vuosaari. Authorities suspect that a 40-year-old woman killed her infant child, who was under a year old, in early summer. According to the police investigation, the cause of death was malnutrition and dehydration. The estimated timeframe for the crime occurred between May 14 and June 12. On June 12, the suspect called emergency services herself.

In a statement, investigation leader and crime commissioner Tuomas Lindholm noted, “The suspect provided some explanation during questioning regarding the circumstances leading to the victim’s death, but the explanation did not sound credible.” The preliminary investigation revealed that the mother lived alone with the child, and no other individuals reported seeing the infant during the timeline of the events.

Lindholm mentioned that neighbors had previously observed a crying child and had reported the situation to emergency services. One neighbor even attempted to offer assistance to the suspect at her doorstep in late May. Additionally, a friend of the suspect visited her residence in early June, but the suspect did not allow her to enter.

Further details are expected to emerge as the case continues to develop.
