Faroese vessels catch one-third of mackerel quota in Norwegian waters

Faroe Islands

Faroese vessels have now caught one-third of the mackerel they are allowed to fish in Norwegian waters.

According to a summary from the Norwegian Fishermen’s Sales Organization for last week, Faroese ships have harvested 31 percent of their quota in Norwegian seas, amounting to 11,036 tons out of a total quota of 35,491 tons.

The agreement with Norway regarding mackerel stipulates that all mackerel caught by Faroese vessels in Norwegian waters must be sold through or with the approval of the Norwegian Fishermen’s Sales Organization. However, this does not mean that the mackerel must be landed in Norway.

The considerable amount of mackerel caught by Faroese vessels has been sold to industries in the Faroe Islands.

Norwegian vessels have accounted for 44 percent of their own mackerel quota, which totals 237,907 tons.
