The number of unemployed job seekers is on the rise, particularly with a significant increase in long-term unemployment. According to Jukka Appelqvist, chief economist at the Central Chamber of Commerce, the number of long-term unemployed persons is alarming, soon expected to surpass 100,000. Many companies have also recently announced plans to initiate restructuring discussions, which will lead to layoffs. Simultaneously, the number of job vacancies has dropped by over 50% in the past year, intensifying competition for available positions.

In this challenging landscape, addressing gaps in one’s work history can be daunting. We consulted four experts on how to effectively explain these gaps in a CV when job hunting. The essential point is to be honest and clear. It’s beneficial to mention periods of absence from work, providing a brief explanation, such as parental leave or a sabbatical abroad. Highlighting any volunteer work during this time can showcase engagement and proactivity.

Candidates should be prepared to discuss these gaps in a job interview succinctly and positively, emphasizing personal growth or skills gained. It’s important to communicate what motivates a return to the workforce.

While transparency is valuable, not all details need to be disclosed. Many individuals have gaps for various reasons, and each person is entitled to privacy. If the absence relates to health issues, it’s encouraged to be candid while keeping specific details private, sharing only that it was due to personal reasons.

Employing a skills-based CV can be advantageous, as it emphasizes competencies and achievements over chronological work history. Tailoring the CV for each employer is crucial, articulating why you are a suitable candidate for the role.
