Closure of Stockholm Arlanda Airport due to drone alert affects multiple flights

Monday 9th 2024 on 21:48 in
Sweden

On Monday night, a decision was made to close Stockholm Arlanda Airport, impacting a total of six flights, according to open flight data. Two of these flights were redirected to Skavsta but later landed at Arlanda with delays. One flight was diverted to Landvetter, located outside of Gothenburg, while another was rerouted to Helsinki, where passengers had to spend the night.

The airport closure was triggered by a drone alert. The events surrounding the incident raised suspicions of possible intentional acts.

The closure and subsequent diversions highlight ongoing concerns about airport security and readiness in the face of unauthorized drone activity. The military has noted the timing of the incident, suggesting it might have been aimed at testing the airport’s response capabilities.

As authorities work to address the situation, the impact on travelers remains significant, with disruptions leading to lost time and unexpected accommodations.
