Monday 9th 2024 on 19:08 in
Faroe Islands

On Friday, Smyril was docked, prompting concerns from local leaders about safety in Suðuroy. Bjarni Johansen, the mayor of Vágur, expressed that the community no longer feels secure, and he believes it may be time for the mayors on the island to unite and issue a collective statement regarding the issue.

Johansen highlighted that Smyril is approaching 20 years of service and will be taken out of operation for an extended period starting next year. Several potential solutions have been discussed recently to address the growing concerns over maritime safety and transportation reliability.

Given these developments, local authorities are emphasizing the need for proactive measures to ensure the ongoing safety and connectivity of the islands.
