The investigation into the Finnish Security Intelligence Service (Supo) has expanded to include one of its special investigators, according to Helsingin Sanomat. The investigator was reportedly suspended from their position at the end of August due to criminal allegations. Earlier this summer, consideration was also given to suspending another suspect, a senior inspector.

Supo confirmed to Helsingin Sanomat that this case is part of an ongoing investigation involving former head of the Counterintelligence Department, Pentti Haaksluoto. Haaksluoto resigned and retired in August. The National Bureau of Investigation (KRP) is examining Haaksluoto for suspected official misconduct and is also investigating a data breach that may have resulted in sensitive information being exposed to outside parties.

The suspicions arose from a Russian television program in which the Russian security service, FSB, claimed to have uncovered spies recruited by Supo. Yle published Pentti Haaksluoto’s name during the preliminary investigation phase, citing the exceptional and socially significant nature of the allegations.
