A flood alert has been issued for Skálm, located east of Vík í Mýrdal. The situation currently indicates that both electrical conductivity and flow have peaked, suggesting minimal flooding activity at this time. Authorities are monitoring developments closely.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office announced this morning that the flood had commenced in Skálm, about thirty kilometers east of Vík í Mýrdal. Since Saturday afternoon, electrical conductivity levels have been rising, prompting warnings for residents to exercise caution near the river. Unlike the significant flooding incident in July, there is currently no seismic activity detected on the seismic meters at Mýrdalsjökull. Minney Sigurðardóttir, an environmental specialist, does not anticipate a large flood this time.

“It is difficult to predict with certainty, but electrical conductivity seems to have peaked, so we expect this to decrease. We remain vigilant and will monitor the situation closely,” said Sigurðardóttir, indicating that current levels fall within manageable safety limits.

The previous flood event in July caused significant disruption, including damaging the main road. However, local contractors and authorities are prepared for any emerging situations. Farmers who faced losses during the last flooding reported that they remain calm for now.

The national police commissioner, in coordination with the local chief of police in South Iceland, declared a state of uncertainty due to the flooding. A statement confirmed a rise in electrical conductivity since the afternoon of September 7, though there has been no corresponding seismic activity detected. As the situation unfolds, updates will be provided as necessary.
