Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate in northern Iceland today and tomorrow, prompting significant preparedness measures in the region. Travelers are being warned about worsening road conditions, and farmers have expedited the process of bringing sheep down from the highlands.

A powerful northern wind is anticipated over the next two days, accompanied by colder weather and potential sleet or snowfall on mountain roads in the north. Yellow and later orange weather warnings are in effect for northern Iceland today and tomorrow.

Birna María Þorbjörnsdóttir, a project manager for tourist safety at Landsbjörg, emphasized that preparations are routinely heightened for severe weather forecasts. Alerts are disseminated through Safetravel to numerous international visitors currently in the country. The organization updates its website with warnings and utilizes social media to spread awareness. Additionally, information is shared with local tour operators, encouraging them to communicate the seriousness of the weather situation to their clients.

There’s concern not only for motorists in inadequately equipped vehicles but also for outdoor enthusiasts in the highlands, as reaching them can be more challenging. Local rangers and cabin wardens are actively informing tourists about the approaching inclement weather.

Farmers in regions such as Húnavatnssýslum and Skagafjörður have mostly completed bringing their sheep down from the summer pastures as the worst weather approaches. In specific areas, farmers have moved their livestock early, prioritizing safety in anticipation of severe conditions.
