Overweight pregnant women face an increased risk of pregnancy-related complications, including gestational diabetes. In response, a new initiative at Slagelse Hospital and North Zealand Hospital aims to support pregnant women in maintaining a healthy lifestyle throughout their pregnancies. The program includes a new app designed to assist expectant mothers in managing their weight gain effectively.

Among those involved in the initiative is Bjarke Lund Sørensen, a leading obstetrician at Slagelse’s maternity ward. He shares several tips for a healthy pregnancy:

1. Stay Active: Regular exercise is crucial for burning calories and preparing the body for labor. Activities like cycling, dancing, or swimming can all be beneficial. Daily movement is key to being physically prepared for the demands of childbirth.

2. Be Cautious with Simple Carbohydrates: Foods such as rice, pasta, and white bread are often high in fast-releasing carbohydrates. These can lead to quick hunger, so it’s advisable to limit them and opt for whole grain options rich in fiber to help maintain satiety.

3. Eat Smaller, More Frequent Meals: To avoid overeating at dinner, it is recommended to have several smaller meals throughout the day rather than large portions at main meals. Snacks can be included, but they should be low in calories.

4. Avoid Natural Calorie Bombs: Certain seemingly healthy foods, like juice and nuts, can be deceptively high in calories. Juice can have as many calories as beer, so moderation is crucial.

5. Rest and Avoid Snacking: Adequate rest is essential during pregnancy. Fatigue can trigger unhealthy snacking, so it’s better to take a nap or ensure a good night’s sleep rather than resort to unplanned eating.
