A rescue vessel was dispatched to Ísafjörður on Friday evening after a local resident reported seeing several distress flares in the fjord. The individual was unsure of their exact location, prompting immediate action from the police in the West Fjords, who feared that a sailor or hikers might be in danger.

The search began promptly, but it was later discovered that the flares were part of a celebration taking place outside a restaurant in Skutulsfjörður. Authorities emphasized that using distress flares in such a manner is illegal. Distress signals are intended solely for emergencies to request immediate assistance from rescue services.
