Faroese court to hear case on racial slur charges in Tórshavn

Tomorrow, the Faroese court will hear a case regarding Article 266b of the Penal Code.

A man has been charged with calling individuals who are not white, “monkeys.” These individuals belong to ethnic groups other than Faroese.

The incident took place in the capital, Tórshavn.

Article 266b of the Penal Code states that anyone who publicly or extensively presents statements or messages that threaten, mock, or demean a group of individuals based on race, skin color, nationality, ethnic origin, religion, sexual identity, or disability can be punished with a fine or imprisonment of up to two years.

In December 2019, a man was fined 3,000 krónur for violating Article 266b.

He was convicted of threatening, mocking, and humiliating two foreign nationals while others were present.
