The establishment of NATO’s Multinational Corps Land Command Centre (MCLCC) in Finland is generating interest among various municipalities. Speculation continues regarding the potential placement of this subordinate command, but details remain elusive as military authorities finalize their plans. Defense Ministry expert Outi Mäkinen stated that specifics, including location and size, will only emerge during the ongoing planning phase.

While Finland is involved in military planning, the process is still in its early stages. Mäkinen noted that discussions may intensify next winter when NATO defense ministers meet in February. He emphasized that the command’s location is important, but it represents only one aspect of the larger framework.

Municipalities like Mikkeli are contenders for the MCLCC’s placement, largely due to the presence of army command structures. Other municipalities, particularly those hosting military bases, are also showing keen interest, with Säkylä and Kankaanpää in the Satakunta region hoping for the command’s establishment there. Kristiina Salonen, regional chief of Satakunta, remarked that whether the placement decision leans politically or militarily is a key factor.

Local parliament members from Satakunta believe their region is well-suited for the command, citing strong military presence and logistical advantages. Eeva Kalli emphasized the importance of security and energy production in the region, adding that the decision will ultimately be based on defense priorities.

Both the municipal leaders of Säkylä and Kankaanpää consider the command center a valuable addition to their communities. They express confidence that ongoing collaboration with military and political entities will influence the final decision, highlighting the region’s recognized capabilities in supporting NATO’s needs.
