Temperatures set to drop as low-pressure system approaches Finland

Those enjoying warm weather should do so now, as a shift towards cooler conditions is on the horizon. A large area of high pressure situated to the east of Finland is gradually moving away, allowing a low-pressure system bringing rain to approach from the west.

Meteorologist Aleksi Lohtander from Yle forecasts that the heat threshold may only just be broken on Monday and Tuesday. “We will get close, but I would say it’s more likely that it won’t happen,” Lohtander stated.

Monday will remain warm, dry, and largely sunny, with temperatures in southern and central Finland hovering around 23-24 degrees Celsius. It will be slightly cooler in Lapland, where temperatures will remain around the 20-degree mark.

Tuesday is expected to resemble Monday, although it will be considerably windier, particularly in western Finland, where gusts may reach 20 meters per second. Scattered showers will begin to arrive in the southwestern parts of the country by Tuesday evening.

Wednesday will bring a significant drop in temperatures, with the thermometer falling below 20 degrees countrywide. As scattered rain spreads to central and northern regions, western Finland will experience the most precipitation, while eastern areas will remain dry.

Temperatures will rise slightly in southern and central parts of Finland on Thursday, with widespread readings exceeding 20 degrees. However, rain is expected to move into western areas, keeping those temperatures cooler. Despite the decline in heat, conditions will still remain significantly warm for September, according to Lohtander. “Considering the average temperatures for this time of year, the high for the south would typically be around 16 degrees, while in Lapland it would be 11-12 degrees.”
