The number of sex workers in Finland has increased due to the country’s deteriorating economic situation, according to the social and health organization Pro-tukipiste. Many individuals entering the field are motivated by financial reasons. Pro-tukipiste reports seeing more young adults considering sex work as a means to improve their income.

Newcomers often face challenges related to job availability and access to education. Pro-tukipiste provides low-threshold services such as health care, social guidance, and crisis support for sex workers. Minna Huovinen, the service director at Pro-tukipiste, emphasizes the importance of discussing various life aspects with new clients and helping them develop a comprehensive life plan.

The organization has also noticed an uptick in mobile prostitution, attributed to economic difficulties in Southern Europe, prompting individuals to seek opportunities in other parts of Europe, including Finland. While the police do not actively monitor domestic sex trade, they note that illegal practices such as human trafficking remain minimal.

Security concerns are paramount for those considering entering the industry. Huovinen stresses the necessity of discussing personal safety and boundaries before starting, while Tiia Forsström, a sexual therapist and sex worker, provides mentorship and support. The stigma surrounding sex work can lead to feelings of isolation, but Forsström notes a strong sense of community among sex workers, which can help combat loneliness.

Pro-tukipiste offers support services that are accessible and anonymous, aiming to assist those who may face unforeseen challenges in their work.
