Sky Lagoon in Kópavogur has officially opened its new and larger facility, which has been under construction for over a year. The investment for the project amounts to around two billion Icelandic krónur. The managing director expresses optimism that the updated experience and services will attract tourists to Iceland.

Icelandic language plays a significant role in the new complex, with Icelandic terminology prominently displayed throughout the lagoon and guidance on pronunciation available. The managing director, Helga María Albertsdóttir, notes that this focus on the Icelandic language distinguishes them from typical tourism offerings in the country. “We are presenting Icelandic bathing culture, grounded in our heritage and history. As a result, the language is also a major aspect. Feedback from guests indicates a desire to connect with Icelandic culture,” she states.

Despite the substantial investment, Helga assures that there will be no increase in pricing for visitors. Recent discussions within the tourism sector have highlighted concerns about a decrease in visitor numbers, prompting calls for the industry to explore cost-cutting measures. Helga acknowledges these concerns, stating, “We are aware of what is being said and see that there are signs regarding visitor duration and other factors. However, we are committed to providing quality service and experiences. It is essential that coming here is worthwhile. We also understand the need to monitor the situation closely.”
