Drones are playing a crucial role in Ukraine’s defense against Russia. Ukraine is reportedly losing tens of thousands of drones each month as they are deployed in the conflict. In light of the ongoing war, the Social Democrats in Sweden have proposed the establishment of a state-led development program for military drones. They suggest that the government should begin by ordering around 30,000 drones, which would be financed through defense agreements.

Peter Hultqvist, a party representative, emphasized the need for a significant state order, including drones for surveillance as well as those capable of carrying light weaponry and advanced equipment. The Social Democrats plan to make these orders at different intervals through a state-led organization involving “war-critical companies” that are committed to drone production in the event of a conflict.

Currently, the Swedish Armed Forces have been reported to possess a limited number of drones, estimated to be in the double digits. Experts have noted that regular units lack experience and adequate quantities of drones. While there have been expansive programs within the home guard, it appears few units have been deployed to regular formations.

Hans Liwång, a defense systems professor, expressed skepticism about large stockpiles of drones due to the rapid pace of technological advancement. He argued for a shift in thinking, stating that the integration of drones into various operations is essential moving forward, as they are expected to become integral to many functions within the military.
