Earthquakes on the Reykjanes Peninsula: Seven kilometers of fencing being installed in Grindavik

Construction efforts have commenced in Grindavik to fill fissures and erect fencing, as outlined in the Grindavik committee’s plan. The local council is advocating for the removal of restricted access points to reopen the town to the public as soon as possible.

In August, the government approved the Grindavik committee’s proposal for nearly half a billion Icelandic krónur worth of projects in the town, including fissure filling and fencing off hazardous areas. Valgarður Guðmundsson, a specialist from the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, stated, “Repairs are underway for streets, roads, and essential infrastructure, along with fencing work for dangerous fissures.”

A total of approximately seven kilometers of fencing will be set up. Construction began last week, despite an ongoing volcanic eruption in the area. Valgarður noted, “If we can speak of a favorable location for volcanic activity, this eruption has occurred at an optimal time for us and has not threatened our infrastructure.”

The council is eager to have the town open to the public as soon as possible, removing access restrictions.
