Political changes are anticipated within the Pirate Party following their annual meeting today. Activists from the LGBTQ+ community are making their mark on nominations for party leadership roles. The chair of the parliamentary group welcomed this development.

Thórhildur Sunna Ævarsdóttir, the chair of the parliamentary group, noted an influx of impressive candidates for the party’s executive committee and policy committee this year. The nominations will be unveiled shortly after noon.

“There is a tremendous flow of really great candidates,” Ævarsdóttir commented. The executive committee is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the party and oversees staffing, while the policy committee outlines the political agenda leading up to the next elections. A total of 19 candidates are vying for positions on the board or the policy committee.

The presence of LGBTQ+ activists in the nominations for party roles has been particularly highlighted. Ævarsdóttir expressed her approval, stating, “The candidates come from various segments of society, and I have noticed that many are individuals who have fought for various LGBTQ+ rights. It’s wonderful to see them finding a home with us, as we have indeed supported the LGBTQ+ community with both counsel and action, whether in parliament or elsewhere.”
