A memorial service is being held today at Lindakirkja to honor Bryndís Klara Birgisdóttir, a 17-year-old girl who tragically lost her life to violence during a recent community event. Iceland’s President, Halla Tómasdóttir, stated that a united effort is necessary to address the rising levels of violence among youth. She expressed that the community is deeply saddened by the recent events, which she described as unbearable and unacceptable.

In a Facebook post, Halla emphasized that tackling the root causes of such violence requires collective action, urging every individual to play their part. She indicated that while discussions regarding systemic improvements are ongoing, they are insufficient by themselves. Halla called for love to be the weapon of choice in society, referencing a memorial fund established in Bryndís’s honor, for which she serves as a guardian. She invited the public to contribute to the fund, which aims to support education, research, and awareness initiatives to prevent future tragedies. Donations can be made to a specified bank account.

The memorial service at Lindakirkja, set between 12 PM and 5 PM, will provide a space for the community to gather, reflect, and honor Bryndís’s memory. The church will remain open, allowing individuals to light candles, offer prayers, and share in music celebrating her life. Her family and friends hope that this tragedy will spark positive change, fostering a community where love prevails as the ultimate response to violence. The community’s collective grief is palpable, and there is a strong desire for healing and improved understanding among all members.
