Jasmine Repo, a para-athlete from Jyväskylä, recently visited the athletes’ village at the Paris Paralympics, describing the experience as initially confusing but ultimately transformative. Although she attended the games as a tourist rather than a competitor, her visit was part of a trip funded by the Paralympic Committee.

Walking through the village, Repo felt as if she had entered a different reality. In a taxi on her way to the hotel, she compared it to a Barbie movie, where the characters exist in a world where women are treated equally to men. “We suddenly jumped into a place designed for people like us with disabilities. We could do anything; everyone could be a winner, and no one was out of place,” she remarked.

The accessibility of the village was remarkable, with no stairs in accommodations, outlets at half a meter high, spacious restrooms, and shower chairs available. Although she did not see the accommodations herself, Repo noted that the events also prioritized accessibility, removing any worry about finding restrooms or moving around the area freely.

Repo expressed that being in an environment where everyone was treated equally was a refreshing change from her usual experiences. She often feels the burden of being stared at and questioned in her daily life. However, during her visit, that sense of pity was absent.

Upon her return to Jyväskylä, Repo noticed a stark contrast between her travel experience and the limitations she faces at home. She hopes for a change in attitude towards accessibility in public spaces, advocating for equal consideration of individuals with disabilities and those using mobility aids. “There needs to be a shift in mindset,” she added.
