An eruption at the Sundhnúksgígar region, located north of Stóra Skógfell, has been confirmed as the largest since volcanic activity began in the area north of Grindavík last December. The lava fissure extended over seven kilometers and the eruption officially concluded yesterday.

Benedikt G. Ófeigsson, a specialist in deformation measurements at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, noted that the fissure’s length was expected. It concluded near the location where the magma intrusion ended on November 10. There is speculation, however, that further eruptions could occur to the north, although it is believed that the activity will likely remain along the existing magma channel established back in November.

Despite the eruption’s conclusion, a significant number of tourists are still heading to the volcanic sites, with some even attempting to hike on newly formed lava fields.
