Ellen Hageman recently traveled to Fredrikstad to consecrate Tofteberg Forest, which is under threat of industrial development. She asserts that this sacred act aims to protect the life within the forest, signaling a serious nature crisis that humanity has exceeded certain boundaries regarding the environment.

Hageman, an environmental activist with Extinction Rebellion, has a history of direct action, including chaining herself to a fuel truck during an environmental protest. She believes this act of consecration serves as a means to raise awareness and protect nature from destruction and vandalism. Despite her strong views, Hageman clarifies that she does not believe the church should intervene in politics, but rather highlight negative developments concerning the environment.

Kari Mangrud Alvsvåg, the Bishop of Borg diocese, commented on Hageman’s actions, supporting the intention behind the consecration. While she refrains from providing a clear endorsement, she acknowledges the symbolic value of recognizing nature’s inherent worth and sacredness. Alvsvåg emphasizes the necessity of diverse approaches to environmental advocacy, including both symbolic acts and systematic change.

The discussion surrounding the consecration has sparked debate about the role of clergy in advocating for environmental issues. Philosopher Fredrik Andersen noted that the blending of activism and religious duty could foster important conversations about national values and responsibilities regarding the environment.

Local politicians in Fredrikstad are expected to make a final decision on the future of Viken Park, which could significantly impact the region’s natural landscape, within the next six months.
