Heðin Mortensen, aged 78, has served on the Tórshavn City Council for nearly 52 years and has been the mayor for 16 years. He recently expressed his desire to run for one last term if re-elected by the voters.

In a conversation with in.fo, Mortensen stated, “I want to complete all the good projects we have initiated.” Despite his advanced age, he feels energized and ready to continue his work for the citizens of Tórshavn.

Mortensen first joined the city council in 1972 on a nonpartisan list led by Petur í Gong, securing 71 votes and placing third. He was elected five times as a member of the Union Party before switching to the Social Democratic Party in 2008, where he has remained ever since.

Throughout the last few elections, Mortensen has been the leading candidate in Tórshavn, receiving 2,506 votes in 2016 and 2,284 votes in the 2020 municipal elections. His significant electoral success contributed to the Social Democrats gaining six council seats and forming a majority alongside a single representative from the Union Party.

Mortensen emphasized his commitment to Tórshavn, stating, “I have dedicated my entire life to the city council, and Tórshavn Municipality is my utmost priority.” For more insights, a recent interview with him was conducted and is available for listening on in.fo.
