Hafnarfjörður is undergoing a significant transformation with plans for a new building in the town center. Local authorities have confirmed that a new library and cultural center will be constructed, featuring a 1,600 square meter space within a large new building located along Strandgata.

Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir, the mayor of Hafnarfjörður, announced the acquisition of the new space, emphasizing that it will accommodate the existing 102-year-old library while enhancing community engagement and modern library services. The design will prioritize event spaces and quiet areas, reflective of contemporary library trends from other Nordic countries, including Denmark, Norway, and Finland.

The multi-functional building will include 18 hotel apartments, 31 luxury apartments, retail spaces, and underground parking. Additionally, the shopping center Fjörðurinn will expand by 9,000 square meters and connect to the new structure, resulting in a combined area of 21,000 square meters. The construction effort is being led by the company 220 Fjörður ehf.

The library will occupy the second floor of the building, aimed to serve as a central hub for the community with a variety of educational and recreational activities. The mayor expressed aspirations for opening the new library by early 2026, highlighting its role as a cultural house and center for knowledge.

The project, described as a “revolution” for the town center, marks the largest developments in Hafnarfjörður in decades, promising a significant change to the area’s landscape with a modern and inviting atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.
