New images will soon grace Danish banknotes, with the new designs set to be introduced in 2028 for Denmark and Greenland, as announced by the National Bank. The new notes will feature themes from Danish folklore and culture, including tales of Hans Christian Andersen, astronomy highlighted by Tycho Brahe, the Earth’s core represented by Inge Lehmann, and the Thule Expedition alongside Arnarulunnguaq.

These figures and themes are intended to embody the essence of the nation, bridging past and present for future generations as they use these notes in their daily lives. Christian Kettel Thomsen, the Director of the National Bank and chair of the expert group responsible for selecting the design elements, stated that the goal was to find individuals and achievements that represent the very best of Denmark.

Additionally, the design of the reverse side of the banknotes will consistently depict the ocean. Jeanette Skov Jensen, the design chief in the expert group from the National Bank, emphasized that “the sea connects us and represents our outlook towards the world.”

The announcement marks an initiative to refresh the currency and celebrate significant contributions to Danish identity and heritage, ensuring that future banknotes reflect both national pride and cultural depth.
