Knärot plant sparks debate between environmentalists and forestry industry in Sweden

The red-listed plant, Knärot, is being used by environmental organizations and volunteers to combat deforestation. Recent findings have been reported to Sweden’s species data bank and the Swedish Forest Agency, with a significant increase in discoveries over the past few years.

Forest ecologist Sebastian Kirppu highlighted the importance of recognizing such plants, stating, “Look, a Knärot! They said they would consider it, but here it is, right in the clear-cut area,” while visiting a deforested site in Ånge municipality. On the opposing side, representatives from the forestry industry argue that the plant is not at significant risk and that its presence is hindering too many logging operations. Ola Kårén, the forest management chief at SCA, spoke about the challenges faced in securing logging permits, noting a four-year legal battle with a nature conservation group.

The scarcity of timber has prompted the government to review regulations regarding logging and the consideration given to protected species in future practices. Sweden is a leading exporter of pulp, paper, and sawn timber, with approximately 80% of logged timber exported. Last year’s total export value of forest products was 184 billion kronor.

Additionally, Sweden is one of the highest forest-cutting countries, with only 8% of the forest outside nature reserves classified as old-growth. The debate continues as stakeholders from different sectors clash over environmental conservation and economic needs.
