The Althing, Iceland’s parliament, is set to convene on Tuesday, marking a significant political season ahead. Opposition party leaders anticipate a winter of challenges, with government parties expected to clash over crucial issues. Meanwhile, leaders from the governing parties highlight inflation and interest rates as the foremost topics needing resolution.

This session will be the first presided over by Halla Tómasdóttir, and the following day, Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson will deliver his inaugural policy address since taking office. Elections are scheduled for no later than next autumn, though they could occur sooner if the government struggles during the winter.

The issues perceived as most daunting for the government include those related to immigration, energy—particularly wind energy—and fish farming. The agenda for the government’s proposed legislation will be presented following the weekend.

As Iceland prepares for this politically charged atmosphere, the focus will not only be on economic concerns but also on broader social challenges that may arise in the parliamentary discussions.
