Population decline continues in Oyndarfjørður as housing developments lag behind in Runavik

The population of Oyndarfjørður reached its peak in 1945, when 227 residents lived in the village. Since then, the number has steadily declined, and today only 121 people reside in Oyndarfjørður.

The merger with the Runavik municipality has brought several benefits to Oyndarfjørður; however, a significant issue is the lack of new housing developments in the village over the past two decades.

Ólavur Klein Olsen, who returned to Oyndarfjørður in 2017 after living abroad for 14 years, highlights this concern.

Torbjørn Jacobsen, the mayor of Runavik municipality, acknowledges that while housing developments have occurred in several villages within the municipality in recent years, Oyndarfjørður has not been included in these plans. He assures that efforts are currently underway to secure building plots in the village.

Additional insights into local opinions regarding the developments in Runavik municipality can be found on Kringvarp’s website, where residents share their thoughts on community progress.
